Atlantic Yards on Google Earth

Jon Keegan writes:

“Hey…I worked up a Google Earth placemark of the Atlantic Yards project, with 3D buildings so you can see how monstrous it is…”

“Get the word out!”

UPDATE to UPDATE: Some people have complained that the previous Google Earth screenshot exaggerated the difference between the Atlantic Yards project and surrounding Brownstone Brooklyn. This new screenshot (right) shows the current building heights. Also, this picture from Jon’s website (below) gives a much better idea of scale:

The Accidental Gentrifier

MissNY writes in the
Prospect Heights Message Boards:

“I cannot stress the importance of visiting a potential apartment building repeatedly, and at various times during the day. Also, speak with tenants about things like repairs…security, etc.”

“I live in one of the gracious twin grey buildings on Underhill across from ‘Associated’ (bodega).”

“Had I spoken with my neighbors & visited the building at various times of the day prior to moving into my apartment I would have learned that:”

*People loiter in the halls, use & sell drugs until all hours of the morning.

*The hallways are always dirty, garbage & miscellaneous food items are deposited there.

*Garbage is thrown out of windows.

*Mailboxes are vandalized.

*Repairs are only made after repeatedly calling & yelling at management personnel. (I’ve been informed that there is a three-year waiting list for repairs.)

*Homeless people are allowed to take up residence in the garbage/recycling areas.

*Arsonists repeatedly set fire to various parts of the building, resulting in our elevator being out of service for several months.

“I don’t remember this being the Brooklyn I grew up in…”

“Yesterday at Yelison I was made privy to the knowledge that a woman (who was ahead of me in line purchasing a condom and a little box of gum) had been in 4 times earlier that day for condoms. I guess there’s at least one working girl on Washington.”

Hey Hey, That Antique Clock at Flatbush and Sterling

flatbsh2.jpgNot gone. Apparently knocked down by a car and it’s now under repair, according to lovemynabe.

Charles/ugarte says: “I can’t speak specifically to historical significance, except to say that attractive antique clocks on tall poles are rare these days, but used to be more common. Whenever we lose one, a bit of the city’s architectural history dies. We had one in our neighborhood, but no more.”

“I found a picture of the clock – when it was standing – on Forgotten NY; you have to scroll down to find it. It is designated as “Flatbush and Eighth in Park Slope,” but more accurately was at Flatbush and Park in Prospect Heights. It is a much better picture than my nighttime phonecam snapshot.”

Huh? What clock? Where? Crustythor says: “you probably would only remember it as one of the many public things to which Key Food ties their ridiculous, bootleg tarp ‘awning.’ ”

Prove Me Wrong About Palava Hut

Palava Hut

Originally uploaded by dailyheights.com.

Raulism writes in the Prospect Heights Message Boards: “I’ve mentioned Palava Hut on Dailyheights a few times, and I don’t think anyone has ever responded. But now comes this article in the NY Press. So … Has anyone else even been to Palava Hut? And can anyone set me up with a steady supply of palm wine?”

Here’s some key excerpts from The article by PH-er/CH-er (and DH-er) Joshua Bernstein (JoshB):

“In Africa, a palava hut is a town hall with a high, thatched roof and waist-high halls, so that everyone can catch the goings-on. On Atlantic Avenue, Palava Hut is one of the warmest, most welcoming establishments I’ve visited in months (992 Atlantic Avenue btw Grand & Classon Aves., Prospect Heights, Brooklyn; 718-623-3174)…”

“What you find is a serve-yourself policy and a dusty, see-through fridge. It’s stocked with mini-pyramids of Guinness, Heineken and Beck’s in the stomach-pleasing 24-ounce size. Pay four bucks per bottle, grab a plastic cup, crack the beer’s cap with a Corona bottle opener and sit at a plastic-topped table. Now you can marvel at the exploded-curio-shop decorating scheme…”

“…The well-spoken proprietor, Remy, can often be found resting her head on a clump of pillows, watching PBS on a tiny color TV. The scene is all grandma’s kitchen, if grandma lived in Nigeria.”

“During the daytime and early evening, Palava Hut sells gigantic plates of home-cooked vittles. Though I have yet to sample every delicacy, on one visit I tried fried rice, served alongside goat on the bone (in ‘red sauce’)… The okra-studded fried rice was savory and delicious–and large enough for two–while the goat was tender. The red sauce, however, was a five-alarm fire … Palava Hut (also) offers pepper soup, cow’s feet, beef, traditional yam dishes and ‘land snails’… ”

“You can drink … surrounded by a cast of characters (including) Baba Jagun … During the ’80s, he drummed for Fela Kuti … I feel a little awed by this obscure legend, happily toiling away on Atlantic Avenue, miles away from the stage.” Read more…

What's Up with All The Horns on Lincoln Pl.?

lincoln place, brooklyn

Originally uploaded by joe holmes.

teddyballgame writes: “So I live down on Lincoln Place, and apparently a lot of people carpool or something… I don’t know if there’s just one offender or a bunch, but every freaking morning at like 8 am there’s all sorts of obnoxious horn honking right outside my window.”

“… I know that noise is a part of living in this area, but it’s every morning with these people.”

“Then, like two nights ago, at 1 am, some guy was just honking repeatedly– not a car alarm, either, because it was totally irregular, and lasted like 20 minutes.

“Isn’t there some sort of city ordinance against non-emergency honking in residential areas? I mean, obviously I’m not gonna really ever do anything about it, but if I want to yell stuff out my window, do I have a case?”
