Video Edge: Another Casualty of Netflix?

Playing a bit of catch-up here… but what happened to Video Edge, the “alternative” video store on Flatbush (you know, the one just a few blocks down from that “other” video store…). Here is an update from Asil, posted on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards:

They merged with another video store, I don’t remember the name, on 7th Ave. around Carroll or Garfield. There was a sign up on the window of Video Edge a few weeks ago that said the change was “due to the changing rental climate.” That could mean both rising rent on the physical space and DVD rental competition from Netflix. I would guess that both were a factor.

All Video Edge customers are supposed to automatically have an account now at the other place.
Really sad. It was a great store.

Waiting for the "Second Half": Coming Soon?

It’s been a few months since mysteriously “energetic men in suits” were spotted in the Fermented Grapes shop, talking about the second coming of Half (the short-lived wine bar on Vanderbilt). TrautmanG, who claims he’s one of those suits, reported that the place is to be called Plan B, though they apparently liked our “Second Half” suggestion, and also considered calling it “Diet Soda” (ha, ha).

Here’s what TrautmanG had to say about the place:The name Plan B is for Brooklyn, bar, burger etc. Also means its a casual place without pretension, and is my own personal Plan B … in addition to standard fare (burgers, wings, fries) etc will offer healthy choices and rotating specials. We will have a kids menu as well … (Read more)”

What is the latest? Apparently construction continues, and the liquor license application may take a while. Look for more updates on the “” thread on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards

Why did you choose to live in Prospect Heights?

I chose to live here because it is convenient to school and work. I am within a few blocks of six trains. I’m only 10-15 minutes from Manhattan. The rent is decent. There are a lot of shops, restaurants, bars, etc. that are convenient to me. That’s it.

No, I’m not in Mayberry anymore, but so far it’s been a good experience. I like this neighborhood for the most part. Now I only hope to meet a few neighbors. Then it’ll officially feel like home.

Why are you here? Let us know on the  thread on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards

Intoxicated mrsunshine Mugged by 7th Ave Q stop

This last friday night (saturday am) I was mugged around 50 yards after exiting the 7th Ave Q stop and walking towards Vanderbilt on Park Place ….

I set myself up. I was very very intoxicated. I had just vomited on the street a few seconds earlier and was stumbling home. … Someone puts me in a sleeper hold from behind and I see someone running towards me in a grey hoodie …

Next thing, I’m waking up on the ground with the faint sound of someone sprinting away. Wallet + cellphone gone. Thank god they left my keys.

Moral of the story: Don’t … get wasted and walk home alone at 3 am. Watch your back. I would have robbed me too….if that’s how I made money. I was completely defenseless.

Drive-By Shooting, St. John's and Underhill

Location: Underhill btw Sterling + St Johns

… I was at work tonight (Saturday) when my girlfriend called me around 10:30. She said she was leaving our apartment on Underhill btw Sterling and St Johns when she heard loud gunshots nearby. She knows the sound well because of the rooftop shooting last week, also on our block.

She opened the door … There was a man half-running/ limping towards St. Johns, where he met with a group of women and collapsed on the sidewalk. Bystanders saw that something was wrong and surrounded him, calling for help on their phones.

… this shooting happened directly in front of my apartment … it seems like there has been no violent crime in our little area (by the library, Grand Army Plaza, Vanderbilt) in at least a few years, though it’s remained constant a couple blocks away. What’s going on?

Drug Raid on Lincoln and Washington

Loverly crooklyn writes on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards: “I have watched as the drug dealers on my corner take over my street over the past 6 months. It seemed that nothing would be done. But finally, there was a raid on one of the main drug buildings on the block…”

“Last night, as I pulled into Lincoln Place to park my car after a night of grocery shopping, I was stopped by five SUVs blocking the road. I got out ready to scream at someone, and call the police to come and clear the traffic, when someone at the corner told me, it was the police.”

“I call 311 at least once a week to complain about the gang of hoodlums playing dice in front of my stoop. At night, I have to park on St. Johns, because all the dealer’s friends and customers have taken up every legal, and illegal, parking spot. I am constantly walking around waiting for the gunshots to come out because I never know how bad it could get.”

“I know that this raid is not a cure-all, but … it’s a step in the right direction.”

"High Stakes" Cheesesteak: A Philly Perspective

Jimmy_Sunshine writes on the Prospect Heights Message Boards:
“As a very recent transplant to Prospect Heights with a lifetime in Philly … I figured I should add my $.02 … I ate in at High Stakes Cheese Steaks a couple of weeks ago. Though it wasn’t a bad sandwich, it wasn’t a cheese steak.”

“For starters, there was some seasoning on the meat, which isn’t necessary if you use good quality rib eye steak, and is something you’ll never find in Philly. Secondly, the steak should be sliced thin before being chopped up on the grill. This was definitely not the case at High Stakes – the consistency was all wrong. Lastly, the roll was more like something from Subway than a proper Italian roll.”

“The cheese wiz was actually spot-on, but that’s hardly noteworthy since it comes in a large bomb-resistant can with no expiration date.”

So, since you live only a 2-hr drive or just over a 1-hr train ride from Philly, I suggest you check out the real thing. I would recommend Pat’s, Geno’s, or Tony Luke’s in South Philly, Jim’s on South Street, Chink’s in the Northeast, D’Allesanro’s in Roxborough, or, frankly, just about any decent pizza or hoagie[?] place with a grill.”

“Oh, and one more thing, with service as slow as High Stakes (I waited 15 mins for a cheese steak when there were only about 4 customers in the place), they’d be out of business in Philly faster than you can say, ‘wiz wit’.”

Now… about that delivery guy who’s chronically out of change…

Bubbleworks Alternative?

Danny-O writes on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards:

“Can anyone recommend a pick-up/drop-off laundry service other than Bubbleworks that serves Prospect Heights?”

“Though generally satisfied with their service, I feel like they set their driers to ‘surface of the sun’ temperature levels. Frequently, clothes that I’ve owned and had laundered for months or years come back from B’works noticeably smaller…

“I’ve seen laundry.bz mentioned before on this site — can anyone chime in about them? I like that they offer low-temp drying (for an extra charge), but i’m wary of a place without a storefront and with a somewhat non-professional looking website.”

Whining Reaches Epidemic Levels in Prospect Heights

And who is to blame?

Duke of Flatbush writes on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards: “Are posters on the Daily Heights inordinately whiney?  Seriously… The gourmet food store sucks, the service at the local bar sucks, Tom is a pedophile… the list goes on and on! God knows we don’t need to sell the neighborhood with all the new people moving in each year, but don’t you think a more positive dialogue about the ‘hood would be nice? Maybe even productive?”

How Many Traffic Cops to Tow a Car in PH?

Our new favorite newbie 44ButlerPl posts on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards:

“How many NYPD Traffic Cops does it take to tow a car? Three. And even then, it took over an hour.”

“What a complete and utter waste of city resources. This car was parked in front of a pedestrian crosswalk, and the city always tows these cars away [True – the spot is a major towing-revenue boondoggle – Ed.]. This morning, however, “
