PUNK ROCK WINE TASTING: Friday at Fermented Grapes

AdnyIn what will certainly be the coolest wine tasting in all of Brooklyn this weekend, Andy Shernoff of ex-Dictators fame will be pouring Argentinian and Chilean wines over at Fermented Grapes. The Argentinians are "of exceptional quality while not being overly pricey," according to Debbie, Jan and Kilolo. Brace yourself for Chardonnay with "notes of beautiful pear, fig and honeysuckle," and Malbec that "has
very dark fruit with lots of mineral undertones."

FRIDAY, Feb. 25 from 6-8 PM at FERMENTED GRAPES WINES & SPIRITS | 651 Vanderbilt Avenue – Brooklyn, NY 11238 ~ phone: 718.230.3216 ~ fax: 718.230.3237 ~ www.fermentedgrapes.net

H0tt Vanderbilt Ave – Epicenter of the Known Universe!!1

Omg_h0tt_vanderbiltIn characteristically muted and understated tones, brokers at Brown Harris Stevens describe little old Vanderbilt Ave. as the "hottest commercial strip in Brooklyn – the center of it all!!!" (emphasis theirs). Hot, huh? Someone must have tipped them off to that new HOME HEATING OIL storefront that’s got everyone giddy with anticipation ("COMING SOON"! Can you hardly stand it?). Brownstoner says this listing is still active, so for just $1.2 million, this rather cozy 3-story townhouse/commercial space could be yours!

Bob Law: Of Radio, Restaurants and Retail

87law_bob_1Check out this profile of Bob Law, 65, the former music director of WWRL and host of the "Night Talk" radio show, who owns both the Namaskar health food store Bob Law’s Seafood Cafe: "Both establishments are on the same block of Vanderbilt Ave. near Prospect Place in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights neighborhood. Namaskar has been there for almost 14 years, the Seafood Cafe for three … (Law) doesn’t see his move from radio to retail as such a stretch. ‘I’ve been preaching entrepreneurship to African-Americans for years…’"

"…he and his wife, Muntu, opened the Seafood Cafe … ‘I wanted it to be in between a fish-and-chips place and a sit-down restaurant … The idea was to create another city dining experience by offering people a little something different.’"

BREAKING: Development Gone Mad on Vanderbilt

All the new development around here is getting overwhelming… Staceyjoy has pumped her insider real estate contacts for the following information:

"we’re getting a bakery
on St. Marks and Vanderbilt
, in the building on the corner, the big
one that recently underwent a gut reno … I
know it’s not Blue Sky (from 5th Ave.), unfortunately. Also found out the Sweetpea Lounge, on the
corner of Dean and Vanderbilt, is due to open very soon … Very exciting, eh? Especially the bakery … BTW, Saturday marked the opening of Cato Photography right across the
street from me. The guy who owns it, John, is quite nice, and their
sign is lovely at night."

New Lounge on Pacific?

One of the Joshes writes: "Walking down Vanderbilt Ave. yesterday and saw a new lounge/restaurant being
built on the corner of Pacific, across the street from Le Gamin. Also, new
boutique (Red Lipstick) right by the bike shop. Ladies and gentlemen,
welcome to gentrification at the speed of light."

PS. "It’s not that ‘blue lounge’ or whatever that
place is that halted construction. It’s down on the corner of Pacific, right
before McD’s. I peeked my head in and peeped the permits:
restaurant/lounge/bar is in the mix."

Movie Night in Prospect Heights: Curator Wanted

Soda_backroom_heather_vividHeather writes: "Soda Bar is eager to host movie nights in its adjoining lounge, open since last November. One of the lounge’s walls now has a giant projection screen but plans for the series’ content and commencement are ambiguous. Anatole, the bar’s owner, is seeking someone to curate the series and says interested parties can call him at 646-339-8659." Vanderbilt Barbershop gets Makeover

TerylsAnybody see this on TLC?

Teryls Barber Shop | 597 Vanderbilt Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11238 |
(718) 783-9693

Entrepreneur Magazine: "Many entrepreneurs can’t afford to seek costly advice from consultants, but the TLC series Taking Care of Business gives select entrepreneurs an opportunity to do just that, in exchange for camera time. With help from four experts, dubbed the Gut Instinct Guide, the Management Maven, the Glamour Guru and the Buzz-Builder…"

"Teryl’s Barbershop"
: "Like the film Barbershop, Teryl Dixon’s barbershop has its fill of funny characters and repeat business. But the Prospect Heights, New York, neighborhood has shifted from predominantly black to white, and Dixon wants to attract new customers. …"

"First Gourmet Store" in Prospect Heights

Delicacieslogoset speed pointed out this Chowhound thread on Delicacies (Brooklyn Delicacies), which bills itself as "Prospect Heights’ first gourmet store." (639 Vanderbilt Avenue at Prospect Pl.; 718-622-1255)

Here’s some distilled wisdom from the Chowhound thread:

Owners are nice, helpful, and can make recommendations … open to suggestions
… Cheeses well kept, reasonably priced, but selection may not be as big as Blue Apron or Bierkraft
… Some products seem pricey; Fig bread cheaper than at Bierkraft
… Shop is clean and airy, but design is “poor”; narrowish space; “awkward” shopping experience
… “Excellent” olive bar
Breads from Pain D’Avignon daily
… May eventually have more prepared foods as well as charcuterie.
