Fairly-Traded Coffee in Prospect Heights

That Yarn Guy writes on the Brooklynian.com Prospect Heights Message Board: “Prospect Perk is launching their new fairly-traded coffee, Equal Exchange (bag on left). I was drawn in by the new, shiny machines.

I tried it at a tasting two months ago… it’s nice and strong (like a friendly ox), mellow (like a hippie), but never bitter and confused (like a poet on meds).

Help Murat, Orat, Johan and Nora kick it off this weekend. Try it with a Pete’s Deadly Double-chocolate Brownie or a Chili-chocolate Spice Cookie. New coffee, new cookies, same lovable slacker dudes and dudettes.

um. yeah. that was me.

i was on my way to the 2/3 yesterday morning and as i was crossing st. john’s at washington – with a walk signal – mr. jackass turned left onto st. john’s and more or less side-swiped me. we looked right at each other and then my forehead smacked into the side of his car. he drove off shortly after blood started squirting out of my head and i fell to the ground. a witness told me that the guy was talking on his cellphone.

17 stitches in my head / bruised ribs / imprint of my keys in my left thigh.

f*cking a**hole.

PostFrom the Prospect Heights Message Board on Brooklynian.com:

I hope all you Prospect Heights folks take some photos and post them on www.uncivilservants.org when able on March 15th. I know the area by the Bergen St 2/3 train is filled with abuses as well at St. Johns up near the firehouse (where a friend of mine has been calling the 311 for years to get the “heroes” not to park on the sidewalk to no avail).

I know I got issues in my hood.

Now, all we need is to stop all the double-parking abuses when people go to church on Sundays.

Poor Vulnerable White Girls: Don't Fear "Bad Black Folks"

Do white people enjoy “untouchable” status in gentrifying blocks of Crown Heights?

guest8 writes on the Crown Heights Message Board (yes, you can still post as a guest on the Crown Heights board!):

“My daughters tell me that, as African females, they are more likely than Caucasians to be harassed in our community. I am so offended when I read ‘I am a white girl or puny white male, I am afraid of being attacked by those bad black folks.’ Please do your research, and you will find that the frequency of such attacks in the 77th precinct is minimal. Young Africans know full well that if they attack those [white] folks, the law will come down on them with such force… they also know that an attack on black male or female will most likely go under-investigated.

So how true is that? What do the “experts” say? sje writes: “I had a cop tell me the same thing, that as a white woman, I stood a better chance of NOT being mugged than a black woman in CH.”

“Really! As ridiculous as that sounds...”

First Date in Park Slope: Where to Go?

wexlerglazer (Newbie) asks on the Park Slope Message Board:

Any suggestions for where to meet someone for our first date?

I was thinking Bar Toto (on 6th Ave. @ 11th), as I’ve done that before. But I figured I’d open the question to everyone here…

Basically, I’m thinking a restaurant that’s somewhat moderately priced (no more than $15 or so per entree), quiet, and cozy.

How about:

1. Cocotte at 5th Ave. and 4th St.: Romantic (possibly too romantic?)

2. Chip Shop

3. Long Tan

4. And… Check out more First Date Suggestions on the Park Slope Message Board

"Stoptional" Intersections in PH/CH: Ticket Scofflaws, or Wait for Someone to Die?

Innocent X writes about the Stop sign at Carlton and Prospect Place on the Prospect Heights Message Board:
Sometime soon, some pedestrian is gonna get killed crossing here. Because half the cars don’t stop. They just roll through it quickly. Disaster waiting to happen.”

True… The same thing happens at the corner of Eastern Parkway and Washington. quig writes: “I call it ‘stoptional’. If the police would ticket people who don’t stop, we would have enough in the budget to fix a lot.

HELP US COMPILE THE LIST: raulism is VP of the Prospect Place Block Association… he’s willing to go to the 77th Precinct office and shake some action on this.

Prospect Heights Goes Retro-Ghetto

lulu’s momma writes on the Prospect Heights Message Board:

Was walking down Park Place between Underhill and Vanderbilt just now, and saw a crowd of people around a car. I of course rubber-necked it on my way by, and saw a brand new Infiniti SUV up on milkcrates; all four tires were missing. When I asked the cop what happened he told me someone had stolen the tires.

Man, I have’t seen a car on crates (or bricks) since the 80s! Retro Ghetto!

Make sure you put your club on both your driving and road wheels!

End Times Alert: Plague of Winter Mosquitos in Prospect Heights

mosquito=terrorist, originally uploaded by brainware3000.

How many bites have you endured so far this January? izisharp writes on the Prospect Heights Message Board: “I killed 5 more last night!… 4 of them in my bedroom throughout the night. Damn this balmy weather!!!”

izi is not alone… far from it. Reports from all across the neighborhood indicate that the mild weather has given rise to a fresh crop of mosquitos. Or did they ever go away?

Enjoy the novelty – with weather weirdness kicking into overdrive, we’ll give it just a few more seasons before winter mosquitoes are as unremarkable as the new “riverfront” condos springing up along 4th Avenue. Goodbye Coney Island… hello Gowanus Bay!

Cheapest and/or Fastests Routes from JFK to Prospect Heights?

I Totally Dig AirTrain, originally uploaded by tangentialism.

whereisscott asks on the Prospect Heights Message Board: “I don’t think that I’ve ever had a cabbie that knew how to get from Prospect Heights from JFK. This discovery usually leads to some pretty crap directions involving the Belt Parkway and the BQE, and $50 later, I’m at home.”

“Anyone have any better directions to get to PH from JFK that won’t cost me an arm and a leg?”

1. The standard: “Belt Pkwy West bound to N. Conduit. Take the Conduit to the Atlantic Ave. merge. Atlantic Ave. to whatever your cross streets are and make a left.” -Idlewild
2. The road less traveled: N. Conduit –> Linden –> Right Turn onto Rockaway Pkwy which becomes Buffalo —> Left on Eastern Pkwy. This is controversial, but ugarte says that Linden is faster than Atlantic.
3. Cheap, and maybe not as slow as you think: AirTrain to the 2/3. meganthelibrarian says: “It might be 25% slower overall (1 hour vs 40-45 minutes), but it’s so much less stressful. I know what the transit cost will be ($20 RT a person, versus $65-75 plus tip for a car service RT), the ‘drivers’ never deviate from the route, and I don’t have to make any annoying small talk. Absolute heaven.”
