$1.4 Million for a Playground?

Check out some of the big money being thrown around for jungle gyms these days…

1. The the budget for the teardown/rebuild of Underhill Playground (Underhill Ave. Btw Park and Prospect), underway after months (years?) of delay, is said to have a budget of $700,000. To be fair, that’s about what you’d pay for a floor-and-a-half of unremarkable PH brownstone these days. Yet at the same time, enough to feed an entire Peruvian village for 80 years and still have enough left over to buy half of them associate degrees at CUNY.

2. So now that we have some perspective, let’s take that number and double it, because that’s what the persistent Friends of Dean Playground have pulled down for their renovation project. Thanks, Mr. Boymelgreen. (Learn more about this on Thurs., Dec. 1 from 7:30-9:00 pm at the meeting of the DEAN STREET BLOCK ASSOCIATION, to be held at Iglesia Evangelical Latina, 506 Bergen Street.)

So what’s a Prospect Heights parent to do while waiting for the seeds of playground gentrification to bear fruit? You could check out Mount Prospect Park, a short trek across Eastern Parkway, where on any given weekday afternoon you’ll find a relatively new and fairly elaborate toddler habitrail supervised by a gaggle of Caribbean babysitters (along with some mommies and the occasional stay-at-home dad).

The long-awaited renovations have begun. So far, they’ve torn up the mats, and apparently have not done much else in the past 2 weeks.

What Will Shaya Do (WWSD) for Dean St. Playground? Find out Saturday

We’re a little short on details, but apparently Shaya Boymelgreen’s Newswalk condo development disregarded a requirement to keep green space open. Now, to make up for that, they have agreed to pay for renovations at the Dean St. Playground.

NOTICE: The next meeting of the Friends of Dean Street Playground
PLACE: The Evangelical Church, 506 Bergen Street
DATE: Saturday, April 9th
TIME: 3 PM

“a ‘Friends’ group has been long overdue,” says Paul, a member of that group. “We can do a lot on our own without (Boymelgreen’s) money, but if there is money forthcoming, better it be advised by a group from neighborhood, and not city bureaucrats — besides, the Parks Dept. does need our help.”

WHATIS: Dean Street Playground

According to NYCGovParks.org:
“Bounded by Dean Street and Bergen Street between 6th Avenue and Carlton
Avenue, this playground takes its name from Dean Street. Dean Street, in turn,
is named for Silas
Deane (1737-1789)
, a Revolutionary War statesman.”

FOUNDED (1948):
Parks
acquired the property in 1948. The playground opened that same year: “For
years, although the playground was not officially named, residents referred to
it as Dean Street Playground.”
RENOVATED (1970):
New additions
included comfort station, slides and swings, four seesaws, sandbox, flagpole,
hopscotch area, asphalt ballfield.
NAMED (1987): Officially designated
“Dean Playground” by Commissioner Stern.
RENOVATED AGAIN (2000): Funds ($70,000)
provided by Mayor Giuliani and City Council Member Mary Pinkett. Safety
surfacing replaced.
TODAY (2005): Go
to the meeting
and find out.

Dean Playground: Will Paco Shoot the Dogs?

21670_gold_retriever_puppyThe Park Slope Courier’s coverage of the Friends of Dean Playground kickoff meeting last month left us a little confused, but one thing’s for certain: ProHo dogs should be on the alert for roving packs of local residents:

"…the meeting got off to a difficult start as a local resident, identifying himself as Paco, got up noting that dogs are not allowed in the park, and that he and his friends would start shooting the dogs."

Hopefully an inside source, who promises us an update on FoDP, can confirm or deny.

UPDATE: Underhill Playground upgrades "Real Soon Now"

Underhill_playground_sign_1Joan says she spoke to Marty Maher, who is in charge of capital projects for Brooklyn parks: "He told me that it has been bid out a 3rd time – the first, bids came in way too high; the second time they were out of order; and now it’s been bid out again. They have to wait 60 days for bids to come in, and then approximately another 30 days to award it.  Based on that timeline, construction will start late spring or early summer. It won’t be postponed anymore, given how long it’s taken this project to get off the ground."
COMING SOON (hopefully): a design schematic for the proposed upgrades.

[Underhill Playground Upgrade] ETA: after your kids have kids

Underhill_avenue_playground_4As reported on the Prospect Heights Parents Association newsgroup, the Underhill Playground improvement project is still out to bid, and reportedly
has been re-bid several times. This past week, one group member asked
for help setting up a meeting with the parks liaison, capital projects
manager and council’s office.

Editorial: Isabel doesn’t mind the park in its unimproved state. Kids don’t need RFPs to have fun.
