Happy Mardi Gras, Brooklyn

JacquesimosAndrew G. Wood wrote in the
Brooklyn Rail
that Mardi Gras “signals a change of season as winter
gradually gives way to spring … the festival can be appreciated as a fertility
rite with participants dancing, chanting, feasting and celebrating in hope of
aiding the coming year’s growing season. In certain cultures celebrants imagine
themselves cavorting with the dead …"

BEAST After Dark

Beast_by_heatherHeather took this photograph of BEAST, a tapas place that has not yet opened. Location: 638 Bergen St. at Vanderbilt, 718-399-6855. Grand opening is Feb. 25th, 4 pm – midnight. PERSON WHO ANSWERED THE PHONE: "We are hoping all the liquor licensing comes through … If not, we’ll be giving away beer and wine with the food." Quick! Someone intercept the mail.

PS. More discussion in the dailyheights forums ("Beast Bar" entry).

"First Gourmet Store" in Prospect Heights

Delicacieslogoset speed pointed out this Chowhound thread on Delicacies (Brooklyn Delicacies), which bills itself as "Prospect Heights’ first gourmet store." (639 Vanderbilt Avenue at Prospect Pl.; 718-622-1255)

Here’s some distilled wisdom from the Chowhound thread:

Owners are nice, helpful, and can make recommendations … open to suggestions
… Cheeses well kept, reasonably priced, but selection may not be as big as Blue Apron or Bierkraft
… Some products seem pricey; Fig bread cheaper than at Bierkraft
… Shop is clean and airy, but design is “poor”; narrowish space; “awkward” shopping experience
… “Excellent” olive bar
Breads from Pain D’Avignon daily
… May eventually have more prepared foods as well as charcuterie.

[Menu] Restaurant GEN: Best Sushi in PH?

Sushi_1Somehow, the restaurant topic in the forums mutated into a sushi thread. Restaurant GEN, a relative latecomer at Washington and St. Marks, gets very high marks. sje says the quality, service and prices are "excellent" and overall a bit better than Geido on Flatbush. kestrel_ agrees, even though GEN doesn’t steam the edamame. However, 11238 is a "roll gal, so when the roll selection is at a minimum, I get cranky."

This inspired us to upload a Restaurant GEN menu. [Download menu_restaurant_gen.pdf]
Note they are closed Mondays. 718-398-3550. No liquor license yet; are they "OK" with "BYOS"?

dailyheights weekend: Prospect Heights Restaurants (and Restrooms) on a Wiki

Bklyn_mapaddyourowncomThis is the most user-friendly wiki I have ever seen. Real (non-techie) people can actually use it, without having to learn yet another set of text-coding rules.

Addyourown.com is a "fast, easy, free way for people to find
restaurants, coffeeshops, bookstores … all the restaurant listings
and reviews are user-generated. You can add to, or edit, almost
anything on the site."

Go, add your own!

d'oh!

Toothpastefordinnercom_everydayisdepressWe should have thought of this earlier. kestrel just started a "Restaurants?" thread in the dailyheights forums. Quick takes so far: Tavern on Dean,Tom’s Diner, Cafe Shane, Carls Place, "The fancy Italian place on Vanderbilt" (Aliseo), George’s (The Usual),  Soda, New Prospect Cafe, City Lighting, La Gamin…

Go sound off. Pull no punches. Drew wouldn’t.
