Natural Land: Price Gougers or Convenience Providers?

natural land gouging question-tn.jpgCash only. And bring a lot of cash. A quick stop in Natural Land/Sea Land can easily go overbudget. But how much is too much? On a recent Chowhound Outer Boroughs thread there was some griping that they “often overcharge for even the cheapest products … They know they offer the best produce and groceries in the area and they abuse it.”

I may be wrong, but I think the price of these nuts just went up by $1 a pound… And just out of frame (click here for full image) you can see they are charging $12 for what looks like a pound of hazelnut-flavored coffee. Growing up, I was always told they’re called convenience stores, so you’re paying for the convenience. But too many times I walk away from the register, shaking my head…

Send in Your Menus! (And if you know someone who has a local restaurant, point them to this page.)

1. E-mail attachments (or website links) to [email protected], or fax to this number.
2. If not obvious, indicate whether the restaurant is (a) located in Prospect Heights or (b) willing to deliver to Prospect Heights (neither is necessary, but this will determine where your menu gets posted). Restaurant owners: please note that including photos, reviews, etc. will increase the chances that we’ll do a write-up or at least take a closer look. People will be able to find your menu on the Bars and Restaurants page, which right now looks like it’s an absolute mess (almost time for sub-pages).

Thanks to Lizzie for the inspiration: “How about a section on take-out and delivery? It could work like the car service section, with comments from the peanut gallery. Perhaps someone out there even has a scanner, and you could post all the menus in the area, so that thereafter, not a one of us would have to sort through stacks of Sushi Tatsu menus screaming “I KNOW there’s a Biscuit menu in here somewhere!!!”

UPDATE: Menus found! Jon Keegan pointed out that this site has about 35 menus for restaurants in the North Flatbush area, including Geido, Biscuit and of course, Sushi Tatsu.

Amorina (Cucina Rustica) in "Openings & Buzz"

amorina-kenneth chen photo-nymetro.com openings050328_1_175.jpgNichelle points out that Amorina gets top billing in the latest “Openings & Buzz” column in New York Metro:

Albano Ballerini continues to remake burgeoning Vanderbilt Avenue in his own offbeat culinary image … he’s transformed a Brooklyn slice joint into a boutique focacceria. Pizza chef Ruth Kaplan, an Aliseo customer and avid home cook whose puffy, free-form pies got her the Amorina gig, has a toppings repertoire that runs the gamut from classic (tomatoes and mozzarella) to creative (dried cherries, nutmeg, orange peel, and crème fraîche)…”

HAIFA: Anti-Americanism Bodega Ban (AABB) Confirmed

“The thing is, the Haifa proprietor seemed pleased on 9/11. that was enuf for us, ok.”

Well, that settles it, then.

“Did you not, in fact, on the afternoon of Sept. 11, 2001, whistle a jaunty, non-Western melody while pushing a broom past a case full of expired dairy products? Answer the question, sir!

Beast Bar: The Legend Grows

panthers-summeroflove.org.jpg

Here on the dailyheights.com message boards, we have already learned that the beer is cheap, the cocktails are strong, the food is at least decent, and if you don’t pay your rent, allegedly, you may get your door drilled shut while you’re sleeping.

Now, careful reader Laura B points DAILYHEIGHTS regulars to the latest revelations: “Did you notice this fascinating bit of information in a recent Chowhound post about the new restaurant Beast: “The bartender told us that the place used to be a Black Panther bar during the 70s. According to her, the FBI shut it down, and when the owner of Beast first began renovations she found shell casings in the cash register and ancient Rheingold cans scattered on the floor…”

UPDATE: According to the latest anonymous post on the lengthy Beast Bar thread on the message boards, there’s a quarter-page-with-photo write-up of Beast in Time Out New York, and “I hear that Zagat Brooklyn has also contacted you…”

Flatbush Ave. Bodega "Under Ban for Anti-Americanism"

haifa halal-tn.jpgIn this Chowhound Outer Boroughs thread about the former Peralta’s supermarket becoming a restaurant, area woman jen kalb dropped the bombshell–without further explanation–that the Flatbush Ave. bodega known as Haifa Halal is “under ban for anti-americanism, not to mention past-date dairy products.”

What could be anti-American about this modest family operation? DAILYHEIGHTS contributor Quig pointed out recently that selling postdated merchandise is a long-standing American tradition.

On the other hand, I’m sure the U.S. Processed Food Coalition is not happy with Haifa’s decision to dedicate nearly 14 feet of shelf space to Al Wadi-Al Akhdar products from Beirut, Lebanon. The occupation includes chickpea-dip-in-a-can, which costs only $1.00 and is currently under scrutiny as a potential Hummus of Mass Deliciousness).

But is there any actual freedom-hating going on here? Is it a misunderstanding? A reaction to Haifa’s shoddy, thin plastic bags that can’t even withstand 380 grams of Lebanese hommos tahina? Is it a widespread ban, or more limited in scope–say, limited to a few PH residents who, out of patriotism, are now walking an extra block or so to get milk for their coffee?

DH sought further explanation over at Chowhound, but there was no reply. As Matt Drudge would say, Developing…

Former Peralta's to Become Restaurant?

peraltas-tn.jpgSusan checks in with a report: “Walked past the old Peralta Supermarket on Carlton and St. Mark’s place and saw it full of renovators. The Work Permit says it’s getting a kitchen update to the existing store.”

Any ideas? Also, check out this engaging “he said, he said” article about the demise of this neighborhood bodega. According to the article, Peralta’s landlord, which “failed to renew” the shop’s $1,173-per-month lease, bought the brownstone for $20,000 in 1968 and sold it last August for $1.2 million.

UPDATE: Laura B. reports that there’s a thread about this today on Chowhound’s Outer Boroughs Message Board. The food will be “American,” according to a guy with a French accent, and will involve “lots of wine”…

UPDATE: City Lighting "Closed Forever"

"11217" writes: "City Lighting has a sign up that says Closed for
Renovations.
Why would you renovate a place that is so new? Looks closed
to me.
"

City_lighting_renovationsUPDATE 10:02 am: Out running errands, DH caught this crew "renovating" all of CL’s furniture into this moving van. Are they going to reopen? "No, just closed forever," one of the moving guys said. "I don’t know why."

UPDATE 1:50 pm: "Friend of a friend" confirmation from Stargirl: "They weren’t making enough money. Sad."
