Tonight (and every Wednesday night): Knitting Circle at Prospect Perk

knitting nataliedee.com.jpgStep aside, Home Heating Oil. Knitting is getting hot, hot, hotter than hot hot Vanderbilt Avenue.

Now, Mary writes in to remind you about the Knitting Circle at Prospect Perk Cafe (corner of Flatbush and Sterling Place), every Wednesday night from 8:00-11:00 PM: “Newbies welcome. Just show up. Very casual. Small group.” It’s in the DAILYHEIGHTS Events Calendar, which is filling out quite nicely and quite rapidly. Go add your event now.

Tony says of the Prospect Perk Knitting Circle: “The people in the group are a friendly mix of moms, 30-somethings and ‘dog people’.” We’re still waiting to hear when the Freddy’s Knit Night segment airs on NBC’s Jane Pauley show. Stay tuned…

Sunny at Mooney's

kevin and brendan mooney-tn.jpgHere’s Kevin and Brendan Mooney standing in front of the pub (click photo to enlarge). I happened to be wearing my Mooney’s Pub T-shirt, so I stopped to say hello. The elder Mooney said he hoped this photo would help “sell papers,” and the younger asked if we would be interested in updating the Mooney’s website. That would be great, but I can’t find a Mooney’s website anywhere. Anybody?

UPDATE: City Lighting "Closed Forever"

"11217" writes: "City Lighting has a sign up that says Closed for
Renovations.
Why would you renovate a place that is so new? Looks closed
to me.
"

City_lighting_renovationsUPDATE 10:02 am: Out running errands, DH caught this crew "renovating" all of CL’s furniture into this moving van. Are they going to reopen? "No, just closed forever," one of the moving guys said. "I don’t know why."

UPDATE 1:50 pm: "Friend of a friend" confirmation from Stargirl: "They weren’t making enough money. Sad."

No News On Jared Fogle in 5 Days

Jared_1Brooklynite Josh has gone nearly 5 days without posting news about Jared Fogle, though he continues to misspell the Subway spokesperson’s last name. Despite the lull, we can confirm that Jared has not died from unexplained causes, he has not been busted for cocaine possession, he has not been diagnosed with AIDS, and he did not have a gastric bypass operation. Conch Stew: Cure for Post-Holiday Depression?

KombitbarrestaurantKris included Kombit in her round-up of Caribbean restaurants that "add brightness" as "New York settles into its gray
season."

"Kombit refers to the Haitian tradition of communal farming and
feasting. The restaurant has the look of upscale dining but the soul of
a family hangout. Kombit’s kitchen coaxes flavor out of root
vegetables, perfumes dishes with whiffs of nutmeg and clove and excels
in fried seafood."

Time for lunch yet?

PS. NewYorkmetro.com has another good write-up of Kombit. Click the picture to go there.

Car hits man. Man near death. Flatbush and Dean.

Mapimage_2This happened last Tuesday, Jan. 4, at about 5:30 PM. Looking for updates… have not found any yet.

"Edward Ruiz, 27, was stepping out of the
Lincoln Continental he had just parked on Flatbush Ave. at Dean St. in
Prospect Heights when he was hit by a passing 1995 Jeep Wrangler headed
north on Flatbush Ave."

"Ruiz suffered severe head injuries and was clinging to life at Brooklyn Hospital Center, police said."

"Cops said Ruiz, of 21st Ave., was accidentally struck by a 49-year-old
woman driver from the Bronx. She was not charged, cops said."
