CONFESSION TIME

Confession_1

I already told you this site is for
your benefit
. It turns out that I also had a selfish motive.

It all started
in 1998, when I discovered Slashdot and
convinced myself that every urban neighborhood needed a grassroots news site of
its own.

Then recently, the Newspaper
Association of America
asked me to write an article about how “citizen
journalists” are starting to create “hyper-local” news for ridiculously small
readerships. I started playing around with a trial account with Typepad. Now, Prospect Heights has is own
“hyper-local” news outlet.

Why is this important now? For starters, those fancy
Inter-net “web-sites” that cost tens-of-thousands to develop back in the
dot-com days are now pretty much free for anybody to build, thanks largely to
bloghosts. So you can imagine what career newspaper people must be thinking.
And in terms of getting the word out, Google’s near-proletarian
indifference to the P/E ratio of your publisher’s stock
must have some
chilling effect.

So, go take a look at my article, “My Neighborhood News
and the sidebar, “Who
Says You Can’t Get Micro-Local News in Print?
” in which I was able to give
shout-outs to some of your blogs, LiveJournal accounts, and other Internet
distractions (but not all, I’m afraid).

What's Your Browser?

ServeraspRemember when 98% of people used that Microsoft product to access the Interweb? Looks like about 20% of people coming to dailyheights now use Firefox, a descendent of Mozilla/Netscape project (or at least a vintage 90’s Netscape installation that you’re afraid to update). Another 12% are using Safari on a Mac. Still, 69% are coming here with Internet Explorer. What’s the big deal about Firefox? If Live Bookmarks aren’t enough to make you switch, then check out this page.

What's this site all about?

What is dailyheights?

A place where people can post news, information and various fun things related to Prospect Heights, a small neighborhood near Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Is this for real, or are you some startup business that would be wasting my time?

It’s for real. How you waste your time is up to you.

Why did you start this site?

Every neighborhood should have a place to go for news, information, fun ideas, and (voluntary) time-wasting. It should be created by people who live there, or who have lived there, or who want to live there. If that describes you, then this site is for your benefit (see discussion thread).

Can I put something on your site?

Yes. That is the whole purpose of dailyheights. As long as it’s relevant to people in the neighborhood, and not blatantly promotional, it will probably work out.

Can I publicize my event?

Yes. See the Events Calendar page.

I really want to contribute. But I just can’t think of the perfect idea right now. What do I do?

Stop trying so hard. Relax. An article idea doesn’t have to be perfect and fully thought through. In fact, if it’s more than two paragraphs, then you’ve probably overthought it. It can be as simple as a photo you just took or something remarkable you just saw. Just start typing.

Can I write something about a great new restaurant in Park Slope?

Prospect Heights is not a hamster cage. We go out. We have been to Manhattan. Some people have even visited red states.

Can I just post directly to dailyheights?

Yes and no. You can post anything you like in the Dailyheights Forums. On the main site, there is a very, very, very small core group of authors that have to process and post everything. It would be nice to have a public blog function, but that’s not here yet.

So is this a blog?

Yes, and no… Mainly no.

It looks like a blog.

Well, the entire site is built around a weblogging platform called Movable Type. But there’s more going on here than “just blogging.” Look around.

Aha! So it is a blog.

If you want to call it a blog, no one will stop you.

WE GOT CATEGORIES

We’ve always had them, but nobody can seem to find them. Now, there’s a drop-down box, over there to your left. Javascript is a wonderful thing. (The complete list of categories is in the sidebar to your right–scroll down a bit.)
