thatdog99 writes in regarding an incident that happened last night around 5:30PM on the corner of Underhill Avenue & Prospect Avenue:
“My friend was walking home from his work commute, when he was thrown to the ground, he was punched in the face and nose, as well as kicked in and around his stomach. His wallet and bag were stolen from him.”
“… when he went to the police to file a report today …The police said in the past six months crime in the area has risen, and that, which is what disturbs me as well as I live near the corner of St. John’s & Underhill, there is a group of teens/young men who hang at St. John’s & Underhill Ave, that even as young as 14, have been involved in numerous violent crimes and assaults.”
“The general description of many of the victims of recent muggings in the area, are Caucasian males, short hair, carrying a bag slung over the shoulder. I just wanted to share this information with you, so that you might serve as a way to get a warning out there. I am far from an alarmist, but it did actually send a shockwave through me when one of the police officers told my friend that he should really move out of the neighborhood as its safety is very much in question.”
I came onto this site to check if anyone else has noticed the very obvious police presence on/around Franklin Avenue, between Eastern Pkway, down to Dean St. I haven’t heard of any specific incidents (other than the mugging) that would warrant the massive amount of cops — what’s the deal?
Sorry to hear about the unfortunate violence. I have had NO problems in this neighborhood and really enjoy it. However my spidey sense has tingled more than once. I have noticed a HUGE police presence on Franklin Ave. from Eastern Parkway to Bergen two pairs of patrol(people) at all times.
Note: The cafe SAGE btw Park and Prospect Ave had an incident. A waitress told me someone came off the street and came in with an ere of violence. They keep the cafe locked during slow times.
Please post more comments of police. I am wondering what the official word is.
A friend of mine was attacked recently while walking to my house. I didn’t realize there was a trend. He was attacked on Washington Avenue by Atlantic Avenue. A young man (high school-aged) came out of a small group of other young men (and women) and punched my friend (tall, white, male, carrying a bag) in the face, then ran off. Nothing stolen, but we spent the night in the ER getting his face stitched up. Be careful out there, neighbors!
I know exactly what you mean re: the group of youths that hang out at St.Johns and Underhill. A friend of mine was also mugged (later at night) at the corner of St. John’s and Washington, while walking home from my place.
cops are cops – next time one of them says something stupid like that, ask him where he lives – i guarantee its suffolk county – some crap hole like Patchougue.
I was mugged last summer at the corner of Underhill and Prospect. The police hinted at this area not being a safe one because my presence was seen as a threat to these kids who have lived in the neighborhood there entire lives. The kid who mugged me was disappointed and confused that I had $5 on me.

hi,
my sympathies are with you, i lived on prospect and underhill back in the 50’s to early 60’s. 305 prospect place and my granparents owed a brownstone on prospect pl, where my mother grew up. well we moved out in the early 60’s. neighborhood became dangerous. we moved to butler place, right off of plaza and sterling. the best times of our lives, and then we had to move because the neighborhood became intelorabale. my mother and sister were grabed and grouped my a passing car. drugs in the 60’s infiltrated the neighborhood and all moved away….now it is sooo expensive to live there….and it is still not safe….
we lived there in the 60’s, when bedfort syvestant area, in brooklyn and watts, in california were being looted, it was a real scary time. but the sad part is we all moved away, from the park, the museum, the library and the beautifull area, that i miss sooo much. it just wasnt safe anymore and the apartments are beautiful and the area is beautiful, but the bad has to be driven out and people coming into the area are paying sooo much, and not realizing the danger. form block watches and get to know your neighbors.
peace to you,
i miss butler place……
hi guys
I am moving there (Franklin/Union) from chicago in 1 month and I was checking out the crime rate for the neighborhood…is it really that bad…is it safe for a girl… any heads up will be appreciated…sorry about your friend…
Why can’t the police just shoot the bad guys? It should be obvious who is civilized and who is savage around there. The more you tolerate the savages, the more their infestation grows. Squash them like cockroaches and make room for decent folk who don’t go around mugging people.
cockroaches maybe something you grew up with;however it is sad that people feel the need to harm one another. if our society would invest in helping the community instead of building more prison things may not be so bad.everyone has decent in them if not where did you come from? i do disagree with the way some handle their downfall but at the same time who are we to judge?
I lived and still live on st.johns for over 28 years,a lot has changed these muggins must stop, but you also have to watch your surroundings,,just cause is looks like a nice neighborhood, its still NYC
