Playing a bit of catch-up here… but what happened to Video Edge, the “alternative” video store on Flatbush (you know, the one just a few blocks down from that “other” video store…). Here is an update from Asil, posted on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards:

They merged with another video store, I don’t remember the name, on 7th Ave. around Carroll or Garfield. There was a sign up on the window of Video Edge a few weeks ago that said the change was “due to the changing rental climate.” That could mean both rising rent on the physical space and DVD rental competition from Netflix. I would guess that both were a factor. All Video Edge customers are supposed to automatically have an account now at the other place. |

The day I saw sign that the place was shutting down, my wife and I rejoiced. Yet another local business with rude, pretentious service and lousy selection that is given a pass simply because it is “local”.
Good riddance
I couldn’t agree more with the previous post. The guys that worked there were jerks. I stopped going 3-4 years ago and rejoiced at the arrival of Netflicks – I would rather send an RPG through the window of the blockbuster than ever go in.
They never quite figured out that they were in a service industry. In addition, they did not realize that they had access to a wealth of rental history and could make a recommendation or two to prove their value. Instead they sat back and sort of grimaced at you when you walked to the desk.
Recently I started going back and they had improved but too little too late.
so, does this mean a real indie video store w/ good service would be welcomed in the nabe or is Netflix already too deeply entrenched?
The selection on netflix is something no small video store could match, plus the fact that there are no late fees is great.
Its simply a great product. I think the video rental store is going the way of the horse drawn buggy.
