Today at Gorilla I met this guy who is opening a restaurant called Flatbush Farm in the old Bistro St. Marks space… the bar is already open and the restaurant will open soon. Will be American cuisine w/ a natural/organic focus. Saw flyers around the nabe too.
I had a fantastic meal there tonight. I just went in about 8:30 to get out of the heat and had dinner at the bar. I think the nextdoor restaurant space is opening soon, but I hope they keep the bar menu. Really nice people – they make their own Limoncello, Sangria, and some kind of fruit brandy that is a family recipe. It was quiet when I went in but picked up about 9pm (tuesday night).
They have generous small plates of local farm produce, well prepared. Everything looked good. I started with the deviled eggs, which were perfect and came with a surprise of tiny salted and grilled asparagus. Very nice. Great onion rings – crispy but with a lighter batter, not floury, and perfectly salted. The sweetness of the Vidalias reported on the menu was very much in evidence. I also ordered the spinach salad, which was delicious, with six large black mission fig halves, local blue cheese, and what seemed to be caramelized pistachios. I remember a sherry vinaigrette, tart and sweet (but it could have been balsamic). Everything was absolutely delicious, comfortable, friendly… I ate for two, with a beer, for just over 20 bucks. I will be going there often. I just hope the bar does not change too much when the restaurant opens.
After the bistro closed due to poor food, worse service and a total lack of respect for the tenants who have long lived above the arrival of “THE FARM” was certainly welcomed. After the refit and landscaping the same old problem occurs, obnoxiously LOUD drunk customers being allowed to show total disrespect by screaming shouting in the “garden” at 2am is clearly not how the owners will win over the tenants (this is also ILLEGAL) would you want to live above this? Please THINK twice before you give them your patronage!
Flatbush Farm is a great place. The mushroom spatzle (sp?) is terrific, as is the lamb shoulder with bubble and squeak. I haven’t been there in about two weeks, but I miss it. Even the panne cotta is great – a desert that, for me, usually produces a yawn. The mead is good too.
