Flash! Isa did a bit of investigative reporting (she picked up the phone) and found out that is actually Biscuit, the Flatbush Ave. BBQ joint that has ProHo Foodies deeply divided (does it suck? Is it awesome?). “This is the ideal opportunity for a hands-on owner to expand on an already profitable business. 7 years left on the lease,” the advertisement says. Could this be the beginning of the end for Biscuit? …or just the beginning of a BBQ renaissance?
In an unrelated but related matter, sje reported on Saturday that Mama Dukes (Flatbush at 6th Ave.) has closed, maybe for good: “I’ll miss the excellent ribs … Ms. Combs (yes, she’s puff’s mom) was very supportive of mine and other local businesses, and I’m sorry she couldn’t make a go of it there.” Then we have a completely unsubstantiated rumor that Combs & Co. are leaving because their landlord–Pintchik, apparently–raised their rent from 5k to 7k. Shame, shame on you, anonymous guest, for spreading unsubstantiated rumors in the message boards… but thanks for the Unsubstantiated Good News: That Mama Dukes is looking to reopen on Vanderbilt.

So, Isa, when are you going to take over the Biscuit space and make it into the Post Punk Kitchen?
that unsubstantiated rumor came from the owner, who told me so. good news, bad news.
i knew this would happen when with every bite at bisquit, I tasted salt.
Do any of you remember Sweet Mama’s on 7th Av near 1st St (Park Slope), where Yet Another Damn Sushi Bar is now? Oh how I miss that place.
Telling lies will cause your nose to grow DeeDee!
For the record, during the month of June 2005, Mrs. Janice Combs asked PINTCHIK if we would permit her to break her lease at the restaurant. The lease was not up until February of 2006 ! Quite frankly we were dissapointed that she wanted to close. Understanding how difficult it is to run a retail establishment, we agreed to allow Mrs. Combs to close. At NO time was there ever a discussion about a lease renewal. I could share my thoughts as to why I believe Mrs. Combs closed Mama Duke but doing so would be inappropriate. When a reporter recently visited our office from a local paper, she verified the facts. The reporter explained that since Mrs. Combs closed the restaurant for reasons not relating to the rent or her landlord, there probably would not be a story written. Too bad ! I would have enjoyed having the facts published. I felt that since this posting was an outright lie I would respond. It’s sad that some people have nothing to do but make up garbage.
In closing Pintchik (the company) was establised three generations ago by my grandfather Nathan (1912.) While many stores have been forced to close in the hardware business, we have fought to stay open. I can remember the days of Pergament, Rickels, Deans, and many more. It’s true that smaller family businesses may have higher prices on selected items compared to the big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes. On the other hand try to purchase a simple light bulb at one of the BIG BOX stores. As it was said in Zagat Shopping Guide – you better bring your sleeping bag !
Lastly,
While many people verbally say they like to shop at local stores, Brooklyn shoppers are going to the BIG BOX stores in droves. Many of us have seen the stories of cities destroyed by BIG BOX stores. Brooklyn is no different. In the end I believe that small retailers will not be able to compete with GIANT stores that receive large tax incentives and other government assistance. Let’s all hope that I am wrong. For now I will continue to believe in the independant shop owner. Please shop at local merchants when possible.
Sincerely,
Matthew Pintchik –
Pintchik Inc.
Matthew, thanks for the clarification. Just a note, it was dan goldstein that posted the info about the unsubstantiated rumor, not DeeDee. The name appears below the post, not above.
So now for dan goldstein, looks like you’re making up stories according to this last post. Any other stories you’ve made up that we should know about?
didn’t make it up the owner told me. so the owner lied to me. i’m not a reporter. i posted a comment on a blog.
If Mr. Pintchik wanted to do his part as a real estate investor to stop MORE big box stores from coming to Brooklyn and ACROSS THE STREET he could have and should have done so by not selling so readily to Mr. Ratner, like many of his less stable neighbors have done.
whoops, sorry. I meant the manager, the manager told me. and apparently didn’t tell me the truth.
but no apologies. i was posting a comment on a blog. an appropriate place to post such a comment.
