Charles Star writes: “As I was walking to the train this morning, I snapped this photo of workmen taking down the sign for the Medgar Evers Head Start center at Park & Vanderbilt. I don’t know the backstory, but is it possibly a casualty of Bush administration education funding / No Child Left Behind?”
Anybody know anything about this? Here’s the website for the Medgar Evers College Head Start Child Development Center.
UPDATE: oops. Things not looking good for Head Start today.

There’s been a “for rent” sign there for months, and I remember when they were doing renovations (taped off areas while windows were being replaced and so on).
But for some reason I thought I passed a relocated Medgar Evers Head Start program yesterday morning in Park Slope, I’m guessing on Lincoln Place somewhere between 7A & 5A.
I think they moved to Vanderbilt (next to the Animcal Hospital). If I am not mistake this Head Start is funded through the Medgar Evers College. Im not sure if 100% of their funding is through the Federal Government or grants through the college. I did look into this program for my son about 6 years ago. Unfortunately all the seats for middle income children were taken and I had to go on a waiting list. I was called two years later when my son was in kindergarten.
This place ha been shut down for at least a year or maybe two. I think part of it was that there were health concerns to be over the laundrymat
Anyone know what they are going to do with it now?
The old site on Vanderbilt and Park Place was shutdown due to chemicles from the dry cleaner down below it. They moved down to Vanderbilt, and Lafayette I believe.
I used to be a teacher at that center. we were moved because of chemicals coming from the dry cleaner. Although the center was there first the kids were the ones who had to suffer. We were relocated to a cramped basement on lincoln place. Our second site was always on vanderbilt. However, recently that landlord kicked the center out after 15 years so they can turn it inot condo’s. That location has been relocated but not doing so well. Old parents find the new location inaccessible.
