How long has Muddy Waters been gone now? And how much is New Millennium Real Estate (718-499-2000) asking for this 675-square-foot space, anyway? There HAS been a lot of interest, and sources say that they were originally asking for something like $75k-$85k for the key to space plus rent around $1,200.
Then, about a week ago on Craigslist (Feb. 25) they were asking $3500/mo. (nothing posted about a key fee) and were advertising it as an “espresso bar” space, if memory serves correctly. So, if you can sell 7,000 cappuccinos a month and don’t mind just breaking even, then this might be the space for you.
Anyway, the Craigslist posting is now expired, and they don’t appear to have relisted the space, so maybe a new tenant is getting ready to move in?
Unfortunately, Muddy Waters has reopened.
So many people have complained about this business, and it’s owner (who is bonkers) that it may be more efficient to just skip the online grousing and go straight to the Better Business Bureau. This lady needs to be shut down.
But since I’m here to write a review, here goes:
She (the owner–I don’t know her name) is not only rude and unbalanced, but jeopardizes the health of her customers. I’ve read that the place is dirty, but one day I ordered an iced coffee, and the milk put in it was actually spoiled. So my coffee was curdled. (Keep in mind this is almost a $4 coffee),
I drew it to the attention of the service girl, who was actually very nice. The owner intervened, tasted it, insisted it wasn’t spoiled (the milk was just “frozen on top” she explained) and sent me on my way. I didn’t want to cause a fuss, and like an idiot I paid and left. The very kind service girl looked very embarrassed. When I tasted it outside I almost gagged–it was like yogurt.
So I went back in, said it was indeed spoiled, and the owner stepped in again and still didn’t believe me. (How exactly do you convince someone of this? Interesting problem). Anyway, she refused to give me my money back, and would only make me a coffee with skim milk instead (which I hate) but more importantly, adopted an attitude that I was clearly in the wrong and being unreasonable. This came on the heels of another incident where she gave me an iced coffee with NO ICE, with no explanation, which I didn’t realize until I got to my car. I didn’t challenge her on this because I needed to get to work, but it was kind of sneaky. These incidents came after repeatedly rude service from her, which I tolerated several times without complaint (I’m an idiot, I know).
Anyway, it’s up to you, but I’d stay away from this place. I like to support small businesses, but this is a classic example of why they need oversight.
