set speed on Borough President Marty Markowitz last night at the PHNDC meeting: he “made a showing and I must say I was quite disappointed by his performance. For an elected official … to read off a 5 minute statement verbatim from a sheet of paper shows utterly, a lack of respect for his citizens.”
Markowitz, who took no questions, basically stated he would be happy to see Atlantic Yards developed by anybody–absolutely anybody, not necessarily Bruce Ratner–as long that somebody has financing, a basketball team and a neat website. Not sure if Markowitz stayed for Letitia James’s comments, but he did appear to leave in a hurry.

dailyheights, right after marty read his script, he and another guy – either a bodyguard, or a driver- walked out and left the school.
yes, you’re right marty basically said anyone else who has a plan that involves AN ARENA, office buildings, provides jobs, etc, is welcome to submit a proposal. he knows darn well that the UNITY plan does not include an arena. i can just imagine this entire fiasco being the genesis of some type of donald manes-type scandal where he’s receiving kickbacks from some contractor. anyone remember donald manes, former boro prez of queens who committed suicide?
Markowitz is getting kickbacks? You think? :-0 Eventually proven or unproven, he’s gotta go. I will actively campaign against him for the sleazy crap he’s pulled trying to get over on Prospect Heights. Borough presidents are elected, aren’t they, or are they bought appointed?
unfortunately there is no viable candidate running against him as we speak.
Wanna bet that Marty’s sidekick has some good stories (see, NY Post, Nov 15, 2004, BEEP ‘BOOZE’ BOMBSHELL)? Bet he needed a drink after that flop.
And, don’t forget the financing and architect. Marty said that he welcomed all plans that included a professional sports team, financing, housing, jobs and a “world-class architect.” I didn’t know that Ratner had a world-class architect.
Yeah, Gehry. Hopefully someone else will emerge as re-election approaches, whenever that is, it’s not soon enough.
Yeah, Gehry. He made a public statement at the beginning of this scam that was quoted in all the papers, how he’s “excited to build a neighborhood from scratch”, like there’s nothing or no-one here. Hey Frank, Build THIS, you arrogant jerk! Take a walk and a look around the ‘hood before you agree to demolish peoples occupied homes and viable businesses.
Hopefully someone else will emerge as re-election approaches. Whenever that is, it’s not soon enough.
