During a recent visit to INDIA PLACE on Vanderbilt Ave., we discovered the Mixed Traditional Indian Salad w/House Dressing (SOUP & SALAD course, $2.50). Though there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to reproduce this dish in your own kitchen, we offer this as a rough guide to the ingredients:
-Iceberg Lettuce
-Sliced Tomato, ripe
-Sliced Cucumber, also fairly ripe
-Italian dressing (Kraft? Wish-Bone? The waiter wasn’t specific)
A lot of questions remain. On what part of the subcontinent can you find "traditional Indian salad" consisting of iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber and Italian dressing? And how far back does this tradition date? We may need to do a follow-up on this.
INDIA PLACE | Finest Indian Cuisine | 655 Vanderbilt Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11238; 718-398-7776. Open daily. Take-out available.
They are geniuses at blending traditional north indian palace cuisine with traditional north american small town pot luck cuisine. Try the saag paneer. If I closed my eyes, I’d swear I was digging in to Great Aunt Mabel’s spinach dip.
It’s only a matter of time before they kick the bucket.
Hey, better that than another Home Heating Oil place. I actually think their take-out dinner special is a pretty good deal. It comes with appetizers and bread, which for me is enough food for two meals at least.
Maybe when India Place goes belly up, they can open a Home Heating Gas place.
Then it would be a Home Heating WAR on Vanderbilt!
So I just went on this site… again and under the web title it said the following:
” HOME HEATING OIL business grows in Brooklyn”
That is so funny. The webmaster should interview the owners of the place. That could be funny.
Their takeout dinner special rocks. It’s about time we have good Indian in the PH!
Hey, did anybody else notice that the Home Heating Oil place looked open this morning? Not that there was any furniture, or heating oil, to be seen.
Someone should stakeout HHO.
This review blows. Everyone here who puts down this restaurant obviously does not know good indian food.
The whole indian salad this is SO bogus because all of the indian places that I’ve been to in park slope/prospect heights does the SAME EXACT THING.
The food, however, if you’re not too much of a bonehead, is the best indian food I’ve had since I’ve been in London. And if you eat at Baluchi’s and think that THAT is good.. it’s fucking telling what kind of food you eat.
i think isa is taking this WAAAAY too seriously.
that said, i really enjoy this place for delivery. super quick, and serviceable indian food. in fact one dish i had here was the best indian dish i’d had in my LIFE, but i can’t remember what it is right now, lol. i’ve had a few missteps also, but all in all i really enjoy this place and am glad they are here in the nabe.
Sorry guys… but India Place really doesn’t cut it when compared to Joy on Flatbush (though I think Joy’s food tastes a tad less when delivered).
